DETAILED GUIDANCE, INFORMATION ON SEQUESTRATION AND FURLOUGHS

Friday, March 22, 2013 - 10:15am

This is where we will be posting detailed information from the Department of Defense, the services and DoD agencies on sequestration and planned civilian employee furloughs. Entries are posted as new information becomes available. Actual documents are posted at the bottom of this page.

Update, 3/22/13 -- The Pentagon announced Thursday, March 21, that it will delay issuing furlough notices by two weeks so it can analyze the continuing resolution Congress has passed that funds the government through September. The CR shifted money between Pentagon accounts, which could allow the department to reduce the number of days federal employees will be furloughed.

Update, 3/21/13 -- The Army issued a memo on Wednesday, March 20, outlining rules it will follow in carrying out administrative furloughs ordered by sequestration. The Army plans to allow only narrow exceptions to furloughs of its civilian employees and will neither put them on overtime nor shift work to contractors to make up for the lost work time. A copy of the memo is below.

Update, 3/1/13 --  Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan has created a furlough pay calculator in spreadsheet format, which allows federal workers to plug in their hourly pay wage, along with several possible deductions, and automatically calculate the expected 20 percent pay cut DoD employees will absorb if they are furloughed due to sequestration. Stars and Stripes has posted the calculator online here.

Update, 2/20/13 -- Defense Commissary Agency employees would be furloughed one day a week for up to 22 days if sequestration takes effect, closing all commissaries and DeCA headquarters on Wednesdays, DeCA Director Joseph Jeu wrote in a memo to employees. A copy of the memo is posted below.

Update, 2/20/13 -- The Army has issued a report detailing the impact of budget uncertainty on the Army by state. The full report is posted below.

Update, 2/20/13 -- Defense Secretary Leon Panetta formally notified Congress this morning that DoD will furlough nearly 800,000 civilian employees if sequestration is not averted. His memo to employees is posted below.

Update, 2/20/13 -- The DFAS local in Rome, N.Y. (AFGE Local 201) has put together an excellent slideshow that demonstrates the real financial impact of furloughing federal employees -- both the direct impact on workers and the indirect impact on the local economy. Here is a link to the presentation: http://bit.ly/WQb9S2

Update, 2/19/13 -- Just posted are two presentations from the Navy detailing the impact of sequestration and furloughs on employees.

Update, 2/15/13 -- The National Guard has released a detailed summary of what sequestration would mean to the Army and Air National Guard. In short, sequestration "will have immediate and significant negative impacts on the operational readiness and capabilities of NG forces across all federal and state mission sets." A copy of the summary, released Feb. 8, is below. In addition, a memorandum from the National Guard Bureau detailing the impact of sequestration on the National Guard is also posted below.

Update, 1/24/13 -- Air Force Materiel Command Gen. Janet Wolfenbarger issued a directive Jan. 24 calling for an immediate freeze to civilian hiring and other budget cutting measures. A copy of the directive, which was distributed via email, is below.

Update, 1/23/13 -- Defense Finance and Accounting Service Director Terri McKay has ordered significant hiring restrictions along with reductions in travel and overtime, as well as other cuts. A copy of her director's message is below.

Original post, 1/16/13 -- The Army, Air Force and Navy each have issued memorandums ordering an immediate freeze on civilian hiring and other cutbacks to address lingering budget uncertainties.

The Defense Logistics Agency, meanwhile, has put employees on notice that they may be furloughed for up to 22 days because of the budget crisis.

The memos follow a directive issued Jan. 10 by Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter authorizing the services and defense agencies to take various steps to help the Pentagon address ongoing budget challenges stemming from the continuing resolution and potential for severe cuts due to sequestration.

The Pentagon directive allowed the services and defense agencies to freeze civilian hiring, reduce base operating funding and curtail a range of spending in such areas as facilities maintenance, travel, training, conferences and administrative expenses.

Each of the memos are below. More will be added here as they become available.

On Jan. 16, AFGE National President J. David Cox Sr. sent a letter to Frederick Vollrath, principal deputy assistant secretary of Defense for readiness and force management and acting assistant secretary of Defense for readiness and force management, expressing our concerns about how these cuts will be carried out. The letter is below.

Playboy Celebrity Interview:

Playboy Celebrity Interview: Seth Rogen on Porn & Being Naked Director Judd Apatow can pinpoint the exact moment he knew Seth Rogen would become a star. It was in 2000, during a taping of Apatow's first TV show, Freaks and Geeks. Rogen, just 18 years old at the time, was playing a teenage pothead who had learned his girlfriend was born with ambiguous genitals—or as he would later explain to his friends, both "the gun and the holster." "The episode could have been bad in so many ways," Apatow remembers. "It could have been too sweet or too insensitive and nasty. coach factory store online But Seth played it real. He acted exactly the way one would feel when given that information." In just one short scene you can see the genesis of Rogen's comedy persona. He's sexually awkward and self-conscious in a weirdly charming way, making jokes to mask his panic. He's simultaneously the coolest person in the room and a scared little kid who doesn't know what he's supposed to do next. "It was such a vulnerable, funny, very human performance," Apatow says. "I thought, I would love to watch an entire movie starring this guy."Apatow got his wish, but it didn't happen overnight. After several years of relative obscurity in tiny roles in movies like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Donnie Darko, Rogen got his first taste of mainstream success in Apatow's comedy hit The 40-Year-Old Virgin, in which he plays Steve Carell's sex-fiend buddy. Rogen finally got his shot at stardom in 2007, in a role he seemed utterly unqualified for: the male lead in a romantic comedy. But Knocked Up—written and directed by Apatow—is a romantic comedy about unplanned pregnancy. It's a movie about growing up and accepting responsibility, but it never skimps on the crude humor. Many of the jokes in Knocked Up would have had the teenage Rogen rolling in the aisles. Born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia in a Jewish family (his mother was a social worker, and his dad coach factory outlet toiled for a nonprofit), Rogen was something of a comedic prodigy: He made his stand-up-comedy debut at just 13, and while his jokes were unpolished, there were glimmers of the profane wit that would soon conquer Hollywood. When hecklers tried to boo him off the stage, Rogen would fire back, "I'm 13. In 30 years I'll be 43. You'll be dead." Around the same time, Rogen and his best friend, Evan Goldberg, wrote a screenplay called Superbad, an obscenity-laced romp about high school kids trying to get laid. It was 12 years before the movie was finally made, in no small part thanks to Rogen's celebrity clout. Last year he starred in Pineapple Express, an action comedy about stoners, and in Zack and Miri Make a Porno, in which a pair of platonic friends make an adult film to pay their bills. Rogen, who just turned 27, may surprise fans with his latest movie, Observe and Report, a dark comedy about an egomaniacal mall security guard. He also provides one of the voices in the animated Monsters vs. Aliens and is working on a script for The Green Hornet, due out in 2010, in which Rogen will portray the titular—and, at least by Rogen standards, lean—crime fighter. Writer Eric Spitznagel, who last interviewed Tina Fey and Steve Carell for Playboy, recently caught up with Rogen on the set of Funny People, his third movie with director and longtime collaborator Apatow. Spitznagel reports, "I expected Rogen to look like his portrait from the Knocked Up movie poster, with the pudgy cheeks and unkempt Jewfro. But when I met him his hair was neatly shorn, his skin had a healthy glow, and despite his constant self-deprecation—Rogen joked about his 'soft, gelatin-like physique'—he could be described as almost slender. "He may no longer be a candidate for diabetes and heart disease, and his once tangled hair may look respectable now, but when you hear that laugh, like that of a lecherous uncle who has just told you the dirtiest joke he knows, it's clear Rogen hasn't changed much." PLAYBOY: In Observe and Report you play against type.ROGEN: Do I?PLAYBOY: Well, sure. You're usually the cuddly schlub, but in this movie you're playing a mall cop named Ronnie who is a racist asshole.ROGEN: Yeah, he's not the type of guy you would want to spend any time with. I think people coach factory online outlet look at the characters I've done in movies and think, I'd like to hang out with that guy. But not this time.PLAYBOY: Was it a difficult adjustment to play somebody audiences will likely despise?ROGEN: I think it's funny. Director Jody Hill is great at writing these oddly epic tales about horribly tragic people who just keep getting worse and worse. That's what I loved about his first movie, Foot Fist Way. coach factory online He pitched it to me as a comedic Taxi Driver. It's about a guy who is kind of a vigilante on a mission. He's a little crazy and slowly becomes more and more unhinged, and he has these objects of obsession that he pines for.PLAYBOY: When you describe it that way, it doesn't sound at all different from your other films.ROGEN: Not really, no.PLAYBOY: Other than the vigilante stuff.ROGEN: I don't think it's all that different. Observe and Report is about a loser and an outsider, and that's what Superbad, Pineapple Express and Knocked Up are all about. It's about these guys who don't feel they belong in the world. It's really the same kind of story. Ronnie is a much more aggressively difficult person to be around, but the general feelings driving him—how do I find my place in all this?—are very relatable, I think.PLAYBOY: He's probably the least similar to you of any of your movie characters. Do you two have anything in common?ROGEN: We both have disrespect for the cops. Ronnie absolutely hates the police, and I feel sort of the same way. That's something I've realized is a common thread running through the movies I've done. We've always gone out of our way to disparage the police.PLAYBOY: That's true. Even when you played a policeman in Superbad, he was a drunken moron.ROGEN: In Pineapple Express I don't think any line gets a bigger response from audiences than when James Franco starts screaming "Fuck the police."PLAYBOY: Have you had bad experiences with cops?ROGEN: When I was younger, yeah. We would get caught with weed and beer all the time. When I first came to L.A. I got caught smoking weed on a beach in Malibu and had to Coach factory outlet go to court. It was the craziest thing ever. I was thinking, We're in Los Angeles. There are probably 400 people getting murdered at this second, and these two cops are taking an hour to write up my court summons for smoking a joint on the beach. That just seemed so fucking ridiculous to me.PLAYBOY: Didn't you once get into trouble for hugging a cop?ROGEN: Yeah. That happened when I was a kid. I was really messed up—too much alcohol at a young age. My tiny frame could not support it all. I guess I thought maybe I could appeal to the cop by hugging him. Apparently, they view that as assault.PLAYBOY: There's no hugging in Observe and Report. It almost qualifies as an action film.ROGEN: It's close. Coach factory outlet online It gets pretty violent.PLAYBOY: Did you do your own stunts?ROGEN: I did, yeah. In fact, I accidentally broke a guy's nose. I punched a stuntman in the face and broke his nose. He got a little too close. He claimed it wasn't my fault, which was very noble of him.PLAYBOY: Did you know instantly that it was broken?ROGEN: Oh yeah. It made a really loud popping sound. You could hear it. Everybody on the set could hear it. It was kind of disgusting. But we used that shot in the final cut. There's a scene in the movie when you can see me breaking a guy's nose.PLAYBOY: It's hard not to notice you've been losing weight. When did you realize it was time to slim down and get into shape?ROGEN: It was on Observe and Report. We shot the movie in Albuquerque, which is at a very high altitude. I'm somebody who can barely breathe in Los Angeles, which is at sea level. I can't walk up a flight of stairs. Albuquerque is at an elevation of about two miles, and the air is very thin. There were some big action scenes. Every day it felt as if I were climbing Everest. So the stunts were really hard, much harder than they should've been. But they're nothing compared with what we're planning to do in Green Hornet. 12345Next

12345Next

Playboy Interview: Barney

Playboy Interview: Barney Frank #8217;s Note: In anticipation of Rep. Barney Frank’s retirement announcement, we revisit his candid May 2011 Playboy magazine interview.]United States congressman Barney Frank is inarguably one of the most powerful and effective legislators in the House of Representatives. What’s arguable is whether he’s a good guy or a bad guy. Like so much in Washington, the answer usually comes down to party lines. Democrats tend to love him. Many Republicans don’t. But unique in an era of vitriolic partisan politics, even many of Frank’s detractors have praised his intelligence and eloquence. One Bush administration official called him “scary smart.” Republican Dana Rohrabacher described him as “very fair,” which is high praise coming from one of the most conservative House members. Frank has many admirers inside and outside the Beltway. Surveys of Capitol Hill staffers named him the “brainiest” and “most eloquent” member of the House. In a New Yorker profile of Frank, journalist Jeffrey Toobin wrote that in Congress Frank plays the “role of wise guy and wise man.” And a recent biography of Frank describes him as “the most unique and fascinating, certainly the most entertaining political figure in Washington.”In the 30 years since he was first elected to Congress, Frank has been an advocate for the poor, has worked on many fronts to improve education and health care, was Bill Clinton’s staunchest defender throughout the Monica Lewinsky scandal, pushed for the legalization of marijuana, hammered away at both Bush administrations for their wars in Iraq and has done more for gay rights than any other politician. Although he had been at the center of many national debates and instrumental in passing significant legislation, he was never before as prominent as he was in 2007 when he became chairman of the powerful House Financial Services Committee, which oversees the nation’s financial institutions, including banks and the securities, insurance and housing industries. Frank was on the hottest seat in the country when his chairmanship coincided with America’s worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.Few Americans need to be reminded of the economic calamities of the past half decade. As HFS chairman, Frank was charged with working coach factory outlet with the administration, Congress, economists and others to figure out how the disaster happened and—most important—how to fix it and prevent it from happening again.Frank worked with the Bush administration and, after the 2008 election, the Obama administration, to develop, hone and help pass bailouts and other emergency measures. For his efforts he received a great deal of praise—the documentary Inside Job singles Frank out as one of the few heroes of the financial crisis—but he was also criticized, especially for his past defense of the government-backed mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which all but collapsed. Some attacks were virulent, none more so than the one from a raging Bill O’Reilly when Frank was a guest on The O’Reilly Factor. In the exchange, immortalized in a popular YouTube video, O’Reilly outdid himself even by his normal bombastic standards, shrieking at Frank and calling him a coward. Frank, when he could get a word in, chided O’Reilly’s “stupidity” and charged that he coach factory outlet was “too dumb” to understand complex economics. The highlight of Frank’s chairmanship was when, in close collaboration with then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, he pushed through historic financial-reform legislation that bears his and a Senate colleague’s names. The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act increases the oversight and regulation of banks and other financial institutions and creates a new agency to protect consumers from practices that helped lead to foreclosures and bankruptcies. Many economists praise Dodd-Frank, saying it could prevent a similar financial crisis in the future. If it survives. After the 2010 midterm elections, when Republicans took over Congress, Frank lost his chairmanship. The new Congress now has Dodd-Frank in its sights. Without control of the Senate, never mind the White House, it’s unlikely Republicans could repeal the law, but they have the power to defund and therefore nullify many of its provisions. Now Frank is leading Democratic Party efforts to protect the reforms—as he describes it, “to mitigate the damage the Republicans can do.”Frank, from Bayonne, New Jersey, served in the Massachusetts state legislature from 1972 until he became a U.S. congressman in 1981. One of his first campaign slogans played off his famous frumpiness: “Neatness isn’t everything.” Apparently not, because he has won every election since. Frank came out of the closet in 1987 as one of the first openly gay members of Congress, and he and others predicted it would end his political career. However, Frank handily won the next election with his largest margin to date. Since then he has been an outspoken advocate for gay rights. He was the driving force that led to the recent repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.Last year Frank, who is 71, said he was considering retiring from Congress. But in early 2011 he announced he will seek reelection next year because he has “unfinished business, including doing what I can to make sure the Republicans don’t dismantle financial regulations and thereby set us up for another economic catastrophe.” Given this and many other national and international issues Frank is at the epicenter of, we went back to him for a second -Playboy Interview. (The first was in 1999, not long after the House impeached Clinton.) We tapped Contributing Editor David Sheff, who conducted our earlier interview, for the assignment. Here’s Sheff’s report:“This is one of the few times -playboy has gone back to a politician for a second interview , in part because they never last that long in office. Many congressional seats are like those in a game of musical chairs, but not Frank’s. Since our first interview, his power as a congressman has increased. He hasn’t slowed—quite the opposite. I spent a typical day with him, which was filled with nonstop committee hearings, meetings with colleagues and constituents and interviews with CNBC and the BBC, all sandwiched between congressional votes. Frank says being in Congress is less satisfying now that the Republicans are in power, but part of him thrives in a familiar role as coach factory store online outsider and opposition. ‘I’m used to being in the minority,’ he once said. ‘I’m a left-handed gay Jew.’?”PLAYBOY: After the 2010 midterm elections, which ended your party’s hold on the House, is your job less fun?FRANK: It’s not less fun, but it is less stressful. Being chairman is more work. Getting the reform bill was a lot of work because it was substantive and complex. There were many interests fighting against us, but it was important for the country. The stress level was high. There wasn’t a lot of sleep. When I was chairman, there were 71 members of the committee. When I went to bed at night, the number I thought about was 36, the number needed to win every vote. It was juggling, debating, deal making. It continued even after we completed the bill because we then had to replicate it to work it out with the Senate. There’s still a lot to do, of course, but it’s different. For now it’s about counterpunching. They set the agenda, and we respond.PLAYBOY: Are you satisfied with your tenure as chairman?FRANK: We accomplished a lot of important things at a moment when the country was in economic collapse. We reversed things. Now our job is to protect what we can so it doesn’t happen again.PLAYBOY: What could make it happen again?FRANK: The financial-reform bill that we passed has in place protections that will prevent the excesses that caused the crisis. It provides regulations and consumer protections. It’s all threatened by the Republicans, who want to dismantle it by defunding it.PLAYBOY: Republicans argue your bill is a job killer and detrimental to the economy.FRANK: It’s the same old thing they always say even though it has been discredited. Most sane people, including economists, agree the collapse was a result of a lack of regulations. But Republicans don’t want regulation. They say the free market is always right, that government is always wrong. They don’t want any regulation whatsoever, but that’s what got us into this mess in the first place.PLAYBOY: What provisions of financial reform are threatened?FRANK: Republicans are trying to re-deregulate by reducing funding to the SEC, which has new responsibilities for investor protection, and reducing funding for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. They want to defund these commissions, which are in place to regulate hedge funds and derivatives. They also want to reduce funding for the Bureau of Consumer Protection. I’m less worried about the consumer protection provisions; the Republicans will probably stay away from most of them because it will look bad if they go after consumers. Americans wanted credit card reform, but the other two.… There’s been all this talk about the shadow banking system, which is part of what caused the economic crash. We succeeded in finding ways to end it, but the Republicans want it back. I think of the old radio show: What evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows.… What evil lurks in the heart of their shadow financial system? We were trying to do away with it, but the Republicans are working to ensure it stays how it was, which caused the mess in the first place.PLAYBOY: Besides losing the Democratic majority in the House, how else have things changed with the new Congress, especially as it includes members of the Tea Party?FRANK: The Republicans are trying to hold their side together, which is difficult because the leadership has to make the Tea Party types happy. It isn’t easy for them. They aren’t able to move forward in ways they want to because of the instability inherent in that dynamic.PLAYBOY: Twelve years ago, when asked about the overall caliber of members of Congress, you said Americans were by and large well represented, that our elected representatives were “a smart group.” Is that still true?FRANK: I’d say it’s a little less smart. There are people around now who have been elected to the House who wouldn’t have been in the past.PLAYBOY: Why? Many people see the election as a referendum on your party coach factory online outlet and President Obama. The bottom line is that the public didn’t like what you guys did.FRANK: The problem was that at the time of the election, the economy was weak. Things had been progressing, getting better, but then we were hit by the crisis in Greece. It was bad timing. Also, we were punished because of the bailouts, which made people angry. The bailouts began under Bush, of course, but people’s memories are short. There was a perception that the rich were getting richer while everyone else was suffering. It’s ironic because the Republicans support the executive salaries that people rightfully hate. They don’t want to tax the rich. People support the Republicans against their own interests. But people are angry, which I understand. So it was a combination of the bad economy and anger because the people who caused the bad economy appeared to be getting rewarded.PLAYBOY: In retrospect, were the bailouts the right strategy?FRANK: The strategy has been vindicated. Each one—AIG, TARP, the banks, the car companies. There was a big problem that would have been impossible to fix overnight, and it had no one solution, but we stopped things from getting as bad as they could have. The entire economy was at risk of complete collapse, and we stopped that.PLAYBOY: Republicans say financial reform and the health care bill will cost jobs at a time when unemployment is still high.FRANK: It’s nonsense. It’s the same right-wing ideology. It’s a Republican mantra, but nothing we did will cost jobs.PLAYBOY: You said you understand voter anger. Do you understand the reaction that led to a Congress coach factory outlet with 35 newly elected members who have never before held political office? People were fed up.FRANK: Yes, and when things aren’t going well, Americans want change.PLAYBOY: What’s the impact of all those untested and inexperienced members in the House?FRANK: I haven’t felt an impact yet, but the Republican leadership has. It has had to pull back and adopt positions it never would have before. It hasn’t been able to maintain control. The Republican leadership needs to build itself to the point that it can exercise some restraint on its extremist members. I don’t know if it will be able to. In my opinion, the extremism is destructive because there’s no room for compromise—or never mind compromise; there’s no room for civil debate. The big difference is that many of these people don’t believe the differences we have are legitimate disagreements between reasonable people. It used to be that way. Now the Republicans have to take a far angrier tone. There’s no working together. They don’t accept give-and-take. Moderate Republicans have to worry about appearing moderate; they have to hate us.PLAYBOY: Are you saying moderate Republicans aren’t being honest about their own positions and their rhetoric is only to placate the extreme right?FRANK: For some, it’s legitimate. For some, it’s posturing. At Ted Kennedy’s funeral, Orrin Hatch boasted in an almost unseemly fashion about what a great friend he was. He told all these stories in which Kennedy was the hero. Now he’s repudiating the notion that he can work with Democrats.PLAYBOY: There has always been angry and divisive politics. Are things worse now?FRANK: It’s been worse ever since Newt Gingrich took over the Republicans. He realized the party wouldn’t make inroads the way it was going, so it was very calculated. He said, “We’re never going to win until we demonize the Democrats. Stop saying they’re honorable people with whom we disagree and start saying they’re bad people, evil people.” 123Next

Playboy Interview with House

Playboy Interview with House Star Hugh Laurie Not often does someone become a star by playing an unlikable curmudgeon week after miserable week. But that’s what happened to Hugh Laurie with House, the phenomenally popular medical drama on which he has turned the limping, pill-popping misanthrope Dr. Gregory House into one of the most memorable and oddly appealing characters on TV.With shades of Sherlock Holmes by way of Hawkeye Pierce on a crabby day, House isn’t out to heal the world or make patients happy. He doesn’t have a soft spot for kids and old ladies, and he would rather watch monster-truck jams than read a stupid CT scan. No matter how antisocial he is, no matter how bitter (his favorite diagnosis is “The patient is lying”), House inevitably saves the day—even when it kills him to. But those are mere character tics. What really separates House is Laurie’s star quality. Unlike almost every other hit drama series now—Lost, E.R., Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Heroes, the CSI trilogy—this one isn’t about the ensemble cast. House is about House the way Kojak was about Kojak and All in the Family was about Archie. Okay, yes, there’s Kiefer Sutherland on 24 but nobody holds together a top drama quite the way Laurie does. Watching him rattle off American medical speak week after week, it’s easy to forget Laurie is British. Born in Oxford, England in 1959, he is the youngest of four children. His mother died following a lengthy illness shortly before Laurie turned 30, and his father, a physician who won an Olympic gold medal for rowing, died just before Laurie landed House. A national youth rowing champion himself, Laurie contemplated an athletic career but let those dreams go after being sidelined by a nasty case of mononucleosis while at Cambridge University. He took up acting instead and was soon part of a talented circle that included Emma Thompson, whom he briefly dated, and Stephen Fry, who became his comedy partner. No highlight reel of U.K. comedy from the 1980s or 1990s would be complete without a clip of Fry online coach factory outlet and Laurie in twit or fop mode on sketch programs like Blackadder or their own A Bit of Fry and Laurie. Those antics made Laurie a household name among BBC viewers, but he never quite broke through in the States. There were one-off guest roles on Friends and Family Guy, and he played the dad in Stuart Little. But the audition tape he recorded in a hotel bathroom in Namibia, where he was filming Flight of the Phoenix, was what got Laurie the role of his career. Since 2004 House has earned him a pair of Golden Globes, three Emmy nominations and the distinction of being one of the most-watched scripted TV programs, even though the actor has never quite let go of England. His wife of 20 years, Jo Green, and their three children still live in north London. It’s anyone’s guess how the California house Laurie bought last summer will change things. Playboy dispatched Contributing Editor David Hochman to meet with Laurie over the course of several weeks as House’s fifth season got under way. They met at various hotels and on the show’s set at 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles. Hochman’s report: “For all House’s crankiness and sarcasm, you would expect him to be played by an actor with at least a trace of mean-spiritedness. But Laurie is as gentle and self-effacing as House is a grouch. Each time the issue of his success came up, he looked as if he wanted to hide under a pillow. It embarrasses him to celebrate his achievements, even though he has done so much. It’s almost as though he’s afraid if he believes in his success, he’ll lose the jones for all the long hours House demands. Every actor should take a cue from the way Laurie handles his fame.” PLAYBOY: You recently bought a house—a big one—in Los Angeles after years of commuting back and forth to London. Has Hugh Laurie gone Hollywood at last? LAURIE: I’ve put down, not quite roots but more like a flowerpot. My family still lives in London, but I finally had to accept that House has some sort of permanence. I was so convinced in the first few years that it was never going to last—because nothing does. Simply statistically, the odds are very much against it in television. But here we are. PLAYBOY: In fact, you’re coming up on the 100th episode. That makes Dr. House one of the crankiest success stories on TV since Archie Bunker, right? coach factory LAURIE: Oh dear God. Don’t say that. Success on a cosmic level like that completely eludes me. I’m deeply suspicious of things being too good. It’s part of my superstition, I think, to generate pain in order to give the illusion of gain. That’s my MO. I’m not saying I reject success, but honestly, I don’t quite know how to deal with it. It’s an old feeling: As soon as you have the thing you’ve been going after all your life, that reasonable degree of security, you start kicking against it, doubting it. That’s why I get uneasy whenever journalists assemble lists. The best! The crankiest! I don’t feel worthy of any list. Lists are for bright and shiny people. Lists are for people on big and shiny shows like Lost, Desperate Housewives, Heroes. I’m more stubbly and grumpy than bright and shiny. PLAYBOY: That cheap coach backpacks sounds a little like House talking. How much of you is in him, and vice versa? LAURIE: I guess we have certain similarities. We both look at the world with one eyebrow arched. We’re both quite serious but also have a childishness. He and I are eternal adolescents but with this morbid gravity. The other thing is, we both have issues with joy, in so much as we think it’s beyond us. I often picture that scene in the Woody Allen movie when he’s on the train and looks into another car that’s full of people laughing. They’re drinking champagne; somebody has a trombone. And Woody is very much on the outside of that, looking in. I’d say that sums up my view of the world, as well as House’s. PLAYBOY: Hasn’t the show’s continued success improved your mood? LAURIE: Not really. I think being moody is part of my nature, though looking back, I am much less moody and depressed now than when I was 25. Gradually I’ve mellowed. I was probably depressed all the time back then. Now it’s more occasional. PLAYBOY: What changed? LAURIE: It’s tiresome to be so wound up in yourself and dark, and it’s hard on others. My moodiness probably has a greater coach backpacks effect on other people—the people I live and work with—than it does on me. Nobody likes being around someone who’s bemoaning his fate all the time, and I didn’t want to be that person. I also understand now what gets me out of my head when I get depressed: physical exercise, doing a chore. I’ll hang a picture, let’s say. Or perhaps I’ll take a toothbrush and clean the spokes on my motorcycle. PLAYBOY: What about antidepressants? LAURIE: They have been an answer, yes. They’re something I’ve tried that has helped. They’re probably good for my work because they help with confidence, and confidence is the prerequisite of all successful endeavors. But then again, as I said, I get suspicious if things start to feel too easy or comfortable, so that’s not a perfect solution either. PLAYBOY: Do you worry that being under the spell of medication will overthrow your powers as an actor, particularly when you’re playing a curmudgeon like House? LAURIE: It’s a tricky question, isn’t it? Pharmaceuticals do raise the question of who we are as human beings. What are moods and feelings if we can change or even do away with them? Does that reduce the essence of who we are? Then again, I tend to overthink these things. I overthink everything, I think. But if your eyesight fails, it’s okay to wear glasses or contact lenses, is it not? If you feel cold, you put on a sweater. Is that changing the nature of who you are? No. I worry sometimes that I’ve said too much on this subject. It gives the idea that I’m some sort of near basket case who has to be coaxed out of his cave on weekends. I’m okay. Really, I am. PLAYBOY: Speaking of pharmaceuticals, House sure does love his Vicodin. He doesn’t have any close friends or family. He has that famous limp, and he’s nasty to just about everyone. Remind us again: What’s his appeal? LAURIE: It’s a combination of things. His being a skilled healer is an attractive quality. We’d all like to feel there is somebody out there who can save us when we’re up against it, when our life or our loved ones are in peril. God knows it would be nice if someone out there right now had the answer, and House almost always has the answer. Also he’s free from the social gravity that holds us all down and prevents us from saying what we think and doing what we want. That gravity keeps us down. But because he doesn’t seem to obey those laws, because he doesn’t care if people like him or approve of him, he’s a character who flies. Dreams of flight or weightlessness are very common to us. We all dream of being able to rise and sort of float above the world, and I think that’s what House is doing socially. PLAYBOY: He’s also funny. LAURIE: Right. There’s that, too. I find him a very funny character, but it’s not just that he’s funny. There was a line, a moment of absolute encapsulation for me, from a scene in which House has to interrupt an operation. His colleague Wilson is in the operating theater, and House has to take a patient in to introduce him to Wilson. The first line, to one of the other surgeons, is “Mind if we play through?” PLAYBOY: That’s funny. LAURIE: I remember thinking at the time that the line was somehow superfluous to the scene, which was actually about Wilson’s appraisal of the patient. All it called for was a line to the effect of “Hey, Wilson, meet this guy.” But writer and show creator] David Shore found exactly the right phrase to characterize House in that moment. Yes, House is dark and tortured and lonely and gruff and all those things, but there’s something terrifically connected and exuberant about him. He takes pleasure in language, pleasure in a good joke. He is a believer, as I am, in the power of humor. In a world of death and misery where people are dropping all around him, where fate is often cruel rather than kind, humor is his only meaningful response to existence. PLAYBOY: Not to make this a “list” question, but what are some of your all-time favorite House episodes? LAURIE: There are good things in lots of them, but as a complete episode, I think “Three Stories” is the best—very ambitious and by and large very successful as these things go. It’s the one in which House gives three lectures, and each one tells a different story about human suffering—in particular, leg pain, which is his malady. It’s the story of what happened to House’s leg, and it’s told with great compassion and ingenuity. The show’s brilliant writers found a way to tie all three stories together, involve the entire cast and create a fantasy sequence featuring Carmen Electra playing golf. You can’t ask for more than that in a single episode. The other one that comes to mind is also one of the very first we did, called “Autopsy,” written by Larry Kaplow. Absolutely exquisite. It’s about a little girl suffering from a brain tumor, and everybody in the hospital constantly sings her praises as a brave little angel. But House commits this absolute blasphemy of doubting her bravery. You’re not allowed cheap coach backpacks to do that, especially on TV and especially with children. People who suffer from cancer are sanctified. But House being House, he makes the shocking but nonetheless inarguable point that not everybody can be as brave as everybody else. If everyone’s a hero, the word has no meaning. I love House for being able to say things like that. It’s quite liberating to go against the grain, even as an actor reciting lines. House then goes further and actually starts to doubt the bravery is hers but is rather a symptom, a tumor, perhaps, that’s affecting her personality. But the most brilliant element of it is that he’s wrong! PLAYBOY: But House is never wrong. LAURIE: Precisely. But he is wrong. And it forces him to admit there are eternal qualities and inarguable virtues like bravery. It’s moments like those—or like the ones this season when House reveals just how vulnerable and alone he is, to the point where he sends a private investigator to keep an eye on Wilson, his only real friend—that bring this character alive. Honestly, though, I’ve seen only about 10 of the 100 episodes we’ve made, so I’m probably not the best judge. 123Next

123Next

Playboy Interview: Tom Cruise

Playboy Interview: Tom Cruise For 20 years Tom Cruise was the closest thing to a sure bet Hollywood had, shining on-screen and endearing himself to studios by working as hard promoting his films as he did making them. He surrounded himself with great filmmakers, including Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, Steven Spielberg and Michael Mann, and stood toe-to-toe with such vets as Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman and Dustin Hoffman. His movies have grossed well over $7billion, earning him hundreds of millions cheap coach factory backpacks of dollars. While not surprising that Cruise’s firm grip on the leading-man crown would eventually loosen, it was shocking that he caused it to happen himself with several ill-advised TV appearances. He got into a testy encounter with Today’s Matt Lauer. There to promote his film War of the Worlds, Cruise appeared to get on a soapbox for his religion, Scientology. Consistent with the teachings of his faith, he showed disdain for psychiatry and made aggressive statements about the perils of prescription drugs such as the antidepressant Paxil and the ADHD medication Ritalin. That followed a couch-jumping appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, a display of his exuberance for his future wife, actress Katie Holmes. Cruise was suddenly in real trouble. Never mind that other actors had endured true scandals and been largely given a pass; Cruise was forced to pay. His long-standing producing deal at Paramount Pictures was not renewed, and chairman Sumner Redstone publicly mentioned Cruise’s behavior as a prime reason. He also became fodder for parody on South Park and other shows and in Scary Movie 4. With partner Paula Wagner, Cruise moved on and raised more than $500 million to take over United Artists, but that eventually fizzled.Although Cruise had been on top a long time, he was no stranger to finding a way around adversity. He grew up without money, raised by his mother (his father was absent after a divorce and coach factory died in 1984). Cruise was a scrappy kid who worked to help his mother and sisters as they moved from city to city. That meant continually starting over in schools, a situation not helped by his dyslexia. As he nears 50, Cruise has put his temporary career crisis in the rearview mirror and is once again among the handful of stars whose participation gets a movie made. Seven years after being on the precipice, Cruise is coming off the biggest box office hit of his career in Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol, a crowd-pleasing film he also produced. It reunited him with Redstone’s Paramount Pictures, for which he just completed One Shot, an adaptation of Lee Child’s popular novel built around Jack Reacher. Cruise continues to take calculated risks: In the books, Reacher is a six-foot-five, 250-pound mass of muscle who towers over the bad guys and tears them apart bare-handed. Cruise is about five-foot-seven and maybe 160 pounds. In Rock of Ages, which comes out this summer, he plays a decadent 1980s rock icon named Stacee Jaxx. It’s the first movie in which he sings. To catch http://cheapcoachfactorybackpacks2i.webs.com/ up with Cruise, playboy sent Michael Fleming to the Baton Rouge set of Oblivion, a postapocalyptic sci-fi thriller that was just getting under way. Fleming reports: “For all the adversity he endured the past half decade, I’m not sure I’ve ever met an actor who seems as content and comfortable in his own skin as Cruise. Despite the media fixation on his life, the industry has always loved his work ethic, and his fan base is still there. His life is a lot simpler than many might imagine. He works hard and keeps his family, including his mother and sisters, close to his side. He dotes on wife Katie and his children, Bella and Connor (from his marriage to Nicole Kidman) and Suri, his daughter with Holmes. Cruise flashes his trademark smile often as he talks about what seems like a great life, but he has also learned a lot in the past few years as he rescued his own career.”PLAYBOY: You turn 50 on July 3. It’s a time most men are battling a gut, getting colonoscopies, losing their hair and monitoring their blood pressure. How is it you look about half your age?CRUISE: I honestly have no idea. I work. I’m always with family. I train, go without sleep. I just go hard.PLAYBOY: You’re not wrinkling up like a lot of your peers. Have you had, or would you get, cosmetic surgery?CRUISE: I haven’t, and I never would.PLAYBOY: What does this dubious milestone mean to you?CRUISE: When I made Taps, really my first film experience, I remember lying at night in the hotel room, thinking, I love this so much. I’d wanted it since I was four, and there I was, thinking that if I did my best on Taps, maybe I could do this for the rest of my life. Turning 50, when I’m still doing this, is okay. On July 3 I’ll be in Iceland, filming on my birthday. My family, my wife, they understand. It’s who I am. I’ve spent many birthdays on a movie set, all great days.PLAYBOY: What have you learned that you didn’t know 20 years ago?CRUISE: I’ve always had the same values. Family for me has always been important. When I shoot, everybody comes. When Kate’s shooting, I’m there with her and the kids. We’re always together. I’m always around my mother and sisters. I always wanted to be a father, a husband. And I’ve always had a work ethic. I’ve had paying jobs since I was about eight years old—cutting grass, raking leaves, paper routes, selling Easter cards and Christmas cards.PLAYBOY: Door-to-door?CRUISE: I went door-to-door in Canada and Kentucky. I was basically raised by women, and my mom at a certain point was paying for everything. We all had to pitch in. So work to me is important.PLAYBOY: Where was your father?CRUISE: He was mostly working, and then they got divorced. We moved a lot, and early on it was because he moved from job to job.PLAYBOY: How did growing up with an absent father inform who you’ve become?CRUISE: It wasn’t a big conflict when I was growing up; that’s just the way it was. I don’t look back and feel bad. I know some people do, but it’s not a burden I carry through life. It’s more like, Okay, this happened. That’s how he behaved, that’s how he did things. He tried, but it just was who he was. Traveling has given me a broader understanding of people, and I’ve always been interested in the similarities we have and why people make certain coach backpacks choices in life. I got an introduction to that as a young child, but it never felt like a weight I carried on my shoulders.PLAYBOY: How much of a hardship was it to have your mother supporting the family?CRUISE: We were better off than a lot and not as well off as others. For me, it was more basic. Like, if I wanted to go to the movies as many times as I wanted to go, I had to find money to pay for it. I learned to go get things. And we moved around a lot.PLAYBOY: That’s got to be tough on a kid. CRUISE: I liked going to a new place. I’ll never forget, there was a cardboard box they’d put in my room. You pack your stuff up, everything goes in the car and off we go.PLAYBOY: Was it jarring to leave school and friends and start over?CRUISE: I found it adventurous. Did it bring challenges? Yeah. You’re always the new kid, with the wrong accent, the wrong shoes. You learn about people and yourself and how to deal with what was not always a safe environment. You had to figure it out. That is what life’s about, change and solving problems and living it. My mother worked three jobs, but she’s a woman for whom the cup is always half full. I wanted to help her and my sisters.PLAYBOY: What else did you do with your money? CRUISE: From as early as I can remember, I wanted to ride motorcycles and race cars. I wanted to do jumps and stunts. Every birthday I wanted only a motorcycle. By the time I was 12, I’d bought my own.PLAYBOY: How rough is the motorcycle learning curve for a 12-year-old?CRUISE: Very. No one taught me. I crashed a lot, because I like to go fast. I used to do other stuff. We were living in Canada and I liked gymnastics. I would do flips off the roof. I’d climb to the highest part and see how many flips I could do before I hit the snowbank. I’d do one flip, and I’d wonder, Can I get two? PLAYBOY: So you were that guy.CRUISE: I was that guy. I used to like to do stuff to show my sisters. They were always like, “Tommy, you’re going to kill yourself, and then Mom’s going to kill you.” I’d be doing flips and the neighborhood kids would come over and look. Then I tried a double and got through only one and a half before I missed the snowbank, landed on the sidewalk and broke my ankle. I was like, “Aghhh!” I crawled to the bedroom. I’ve broken my leg, my nose.PLAYBOY: How’d you break your nose?CRUISE: The first time, I got hit by a fastball. Another time, I got hit with a baseball bat by accident. Then I rejarred it on a motorcycle. No one thought about helmets or pads back then. When I was 18, on the set of Taps, I met the stunt guys. I was like, “You train for stuff like this?” Back in the day there were no videos of this stuff. I’d create ramps to try to jump over garbage cans on my bike, figuring it out on my own. When I was five years old, I’d climb the tallest tree possible, get to the top so when the wind was blowing I’d hang on as the branch swayed back and forth. Then, can I go from this tree and get to that tree?PLAYBOY: Aside from broken bones, what did you get out of all this? CRUISE: I learned that even in times that were challenging, you have a choice whether to let problems overwhelm you. When you’re going to new schools, you’re confronted by different things, but you always have a choice, and mine was to learn to handle it.PLAYBOY: How does this translate to doing your own stunts in movies?CRUISE: I train pretty hard. For The Last Samurai I spent a year training six hours a day, seven days a week to be able to handle a sword and do it on uneven terrain, because I didn’t want to blow my knees out. You’ve got to build the body up for impact. I remember trying to put my shirt on at one point and couldn’t because my forearms had gotten so big. It was the same with Rock of Ages—five hours a day learning to sing, three hours a day dancing.PLAYBOY: Did you know you could sing before you took on Rock of Ages?CRUISE: I knew I could hold a note. I sang in a glee club when I was 14 years old and in a high school musical. But I never had a singing lesson. No one ever taught me how to use my voice.PLAYBOY: You had help from Axl Rose’s vocal coach. How do you develop an arena voice?CRUISE: He was an opera singer who taught me how to control my voice. It’s like learning a new sport or a skill for a character. I had to find out how to move air through the vocal cords and where to place it in my head, in the chest. It’s something you have to do every day to strengthen your voice.PLAYBOY: After singing 1980s rock anthems in front of a wild crowd in Rock of Ages, is it more fun to be Tom Cruise or Bruce Springsteen?CRUISE: For Bruce, I’m sure it’s more fun to be Bruce. I like being me because making movies is all I ever wanted to do. But when I look at Bono, Springsteen, Bon Jovi or Axl Rose and hear the songs they wrote and how they perform them and the life they have, I have a greater appreciation. It takes so much work to get to that level.PLAYBOY: The first song you sang in front of a crowd was “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” with Def Leppard there, watching you. Pressure?CRUISE: Yes. PLAYBOY: Director Adam Shankman said they were eager to abuse you, but you ruined it by nailing the song.CRUISE: I was down in Miami, recording different songs, and Adam called and said, “Def Leppard’s coming by the set.” I said, “Man, that’s cool.” Then I paused. “Wait, I’m rehearsing their song tomorrow.” And he’s like, “Yeah!” So we started right in the deep end, and that was the first scene I shot in the movie. It’s a great song, and I grew up listening to them. They went to the back of the Bourbon Room, and cheap coach backpacks I looked at my band and was like, “Hit it.” All the crew was watching them watching me.PLAYBOY: So what did they say?CRUISE: coach factory outlet Well, the lead singer, Joe Elliott, points at me and goes, “Fuck you! Fuck you!” Then I saw big smiles on their faces, and I realized I’d gotten their stamp. It was a very cool moment. It was important they knew I was honoring their music and not making fun of them.PLAYBOY: It’s hard to take your character that seriously. He’s prone to theatrics, and his only real friend is a baboon.CRUISE: He’s a slave to rock and roll. When he’s onstage, he gives it everything. Off it, he’s looking for soulful moments in odd ways, and that’s where the comedy comes in. We had this sweet love song, “I Want to Know What Love Is,” and I’m falling in love with this girl. But it’s a sex scene, and that’s where it has to be funny, because it’s rock and roll. I read all this stuff about Led Zeppelin, the Stones, Axl Rose, Motley Crue and the groupies. My character has them, but suddenly there’s this sweet scene that changes everything. If it works, people will laugh and it’ll be emotional. This hard-rock guy is singing this romantic duet, falling in love with this woman. But since it’s rock and roll, he’s singing most of it to her backside.PLAYBOY: On the other side of the spectrum, those scenes you shot running and jumping 124 floors up that Dubai skyscraper in Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol were impressive. Knowing it was you dangling by a cable, it was so——CRUISE: It’s high. Yes, it’s high. I always wanted to do something like that. It was one of those times I could build myself up to it physically, train and push myself, and have it fit the story and the character. We spent months figuring it out.PLAYBOY: No matter how much planning, you have to get out there and look down. Way down. CRUISE: Yes. PLAYBOY: You could have done it from the second floor, and they also have computers and stuntmen.CRUISE: But it wouldn’t have looked the same. As great as visual effects are, it just would not have been the same experience for the audience—especially when my director, Brad Bird, said he wanted to shoot in Imax, which I was so damn excited about. I started thinking of -Harold Lloyd dangling from the clock, and Buster Keaton, when you feel the danger. And look, if I’m at the third or the second floor, a fall will kill me anyway. I might as well be on the 124th floor. At a certain point the height was the least of the challenges.PLAYBOY: After a rough couple of years when some questioned your viability as a leading man, Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol grossed more money than any other film you’ve ever made. What did that mean to you?CRUISE: I’ve always just wanted to make the movies I wanted to make, see studios make money so they’d let me do it again and see an audience enjoy it. I’ve tried to keep my head down and just do good work. 12Next

Playboy.com's Exclusive

Playboy.com's Exclusive Interview with Meatballs Director: Ivan Reitman At some point in your life you’ve probably been obsessed with one of Ivan Reitman’s films. It could’ve been his most notorious movie, Ghostbusters, which starred funny guys Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Bill Murray. If you’ve spent some time overseas, it may be the sardonic buddy film Stripes. Or, if you’re a bit younger, you probably brought your girlfriend to the film Friends with Benefits last summer, which starred Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. There’s no doubt that Reitman’s career has been one which aspiring directors hope to achieve. But what you may not know is that his wild ride started at an imaginary camp called Camp North Star 33 years ago with coach backpacks one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, Bill Murray, up in the Great White North. We sat down with famed director/producer Ivan Reitman to talk about Bill Murray’s first starring role in Reitman’s summer camp comedy film Meatballs, which made its way to Blu-Ray earlier this month, Coach Outlet to talk about his memories on set, his work with some of the biggest names in Hollywood and the indisputable genuine charm you find in all of his films.Playboy.com: It must be crazy for you to have a movie you made so long ago coming out on Blu-Ray.Ivan Reitman: I of course hope all of my movies come out on Blu-Ray; I’m actually working on that happening. I’m really happy that Meatballs is coming out again.Playboy.com: Yeah, it’s so much fun! I hadn’t seen the movie in so long. I was actually watching a bit of it at work today and it was a little bittersweet to think that the last time I watched Meatballs, I worked at a summer camp and now I was Coach Outlet Online watching it in an office on a laptop.Reitman: Ah, the world has shifted!Playboy.com: What are your memories of working on set? I know it must be a haze since you’ve worked on so many other films, but Meatballs being your first major film, there must be some things that come to mind.Reitman: Well, it was my second feature as a director; the first one I did was for about $11,000 in Canada, called Cannibal Girls.Playboy.com: I love that movie.Reitman: You saw Cannibal Girls? Wow, that’s insane. After doing that film, I thought I’d be directing Animal House because I worked on that for two years and put the whole thing together. But, having only directed Cannibal Girls, they felt that they should get someone more experienced, so I ended up producing it even though I had worked on the script for two years and brought John Belushi into the fold. I didn’t have the pleasure of directing it, John Landis did, which he did a really good job of. But I knew that I had to get back to directing so that wouldn’t ever happen again. I called up some friends, Dan Goldberg and Len Blum, who I had gone to university with and decided to do a summer camp movie. Amazingly, the owner of White Pine Camp said yes to us filming Meatballs during the summer camp season. After everything was done, the big piece of the casting puzzle of course was getting Bill [Murray] to say yes.Playboy.com: Was that role written for him?Reitman: Yeah, it was. I had done a show called The National Lampoon Show, which was a variety show before SNL and before SCTV. The Lampoon Show had Bill Murray, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Joe Flaherty and Harold Ramis.Playboy.com: Wow, okay! So everybody who was anybody was on the show.Reitman: Yeah, but this is when they were all unknown. A bunch of the cast got hired by Lorne Michaels when he started SNL and Bill, although he was not hired, had done a couple of sketches that first year and was going to be brought in for the second year. I had just finished Animal House and called up Bill, who I of course knew and had his actual phone number [Editor’s Note: Bill is notorious for having no agent and only a 1-800 number you can call and pitch your idea to] and told him that I was going to try and do this film up in Canada at a summer camp and promised it would be a lot of fun. He said, “Well, you know…I’d rather just golf and play baseball this summer because I’m going to go work on SNL next year.”Playboy.com: It seems that not much has changed with him.Reitman: After that, I just kind of kept at him and wouldn’t offer it to anyone else. I was cofinancing the film with my Canadian partners and then we were on location at the camp with full crew and all the other cast and literally I didn’t find out he was going to do the movie until the day before we started shooting. He showed up on the second day.Playboy.com: That’s incredible. Is it true that the clothes he was wearing in his first take are what he showed up in?Reitman: I’m not so sure if that’s true, but it could very well be. The first thing we shot was when he introduces the viewers to the counselors-in-training. Although he used the structure of the scene that was written, he literally changed every line. And every line that he changed was of course much better than what was written. I remember turning to my partners and writers saying, “Thank god he said yes, I don’t think the movie would be very good without him!”Playboy.com: Is it strange to be the director of a film which many others are based upon or with scenes that are used as tropes?Reitman: It used to bother me. I wasn’t upset about it, but it was annoying. I felt like they were Coach Outlet stealing. But now I see it more fully and realize it’s a compliment. It’s a long tradition in any creative work to borrow from others before. Particularly in the music field as of late, it’s all samples from other great songs and artists are creating new work from it. So I think that sort of helped me come to terms with that.Playboy.com: Fast-forward 33 years since the first release of Meatballs. A lot has changed for you!Reitman: We just finished doing this factory Coach Outlet wonderful movie called Hitchcock, which stars Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren. Hopkins plays Hitchcock and Mirren plays his wife. It’s a story of their lives in the year that he made Psycho so there’s a lot of the shooting of that film in it. Scarlett Johansson plays the Janet Leigh role in Psycho. We have this extraordinary cast and we’re rushing it out because the studio is really high on it and hopes that it will get a lot of attention.Playboy.com: You’ve worked with so many big names. Who was the wildest on set: John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd or Bill Murray?Reitman: The person who always historically brought the most energy was Bill. Bill was just this force of nature. But, in all honesty, all three of them are forces of nature.John Belushi’s career was unfortunately so short. I got to work with him both in The Lampoon Show where I saw him onstage and then again on Animal House where he was in great shape and not on drugs whatsoever. He was just this extraordinarily funny and charismatic person. I think he could’ve been a great dramatic actor. He used to do Marlon Brando on SNL, but what made it so memorable was that lure he had that Brando had which, in my opinion, is incontestably taking the stage or being the center of attention where you can’t take your eyes off him no matter who is with him.As for Dan Aykroyd, he’s sort of this mad genius. No one else has come up with the conceptual ideas that he has. I mean he single-handedly invented the Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters, Coneheads, the wild and crazy Czechoslovakian brothers…These are huge ideas. He’s not a wild and crazy guy in real life, but he’s a really good guy who’s smart and funny coach backpacks and has these brilliant out-there ideas.Playboy.com: How did you film your earlier movies? I feel the same sense of “normal” as I get when I watch Judd Apatow films, especially in Meatballs and Stripes.Reitman: I like to think it’s because [I’m a] a fabulous director. [Laughs] It’s always been my style to play things in a real world. I’ve always believed that my principles as a director were that the main actors in my films were always the smartest guys in the room, as opposed as the dumbest guys, which is another form of comedy altogether. If you could be as clever as Bill Murray or Harold Ramis, and you were as brave as they are, this is the way you might be able to say something if you were at the top of your game. It’s interesting; I see it now after Animal House, Stripes and Meatballs were rereleased.I think people remember these movies very fondly and they have resonated through these decades and don’t really feel dated in the way most movies from 30 or even five years ago feel. I mean the music is, the sense of clothing and style is different, but there’s something about the storytelling, comedy and the character interplay that seems to work today as well as before.

In case he / she results the particular Standford link, Chelsea could instantly always be 7steps contenders, for the reason that could yet again possess the the planet's among the finest. Chelsea eventually left pertaining to half a dozen ages, the choices prove Mourinho's position, while in the inter get a few overhead, in Real The city practical knowledge I don't believe that's a disappointment, he / she had overcome the particular really Barcelona micro-blog, micro-blog receiving Los angeles Liga champions past time, also can get 2nd kings goblet trophies in 2010. Real Madrid's profits / losses, might be Chelsea's return, Mourinho could yet again make the particular doldrums for the Leading League 7steps. Standford link has a great staff, use a two or three augment, they should turn into high-profile electrical power yet again. Mourinho additionally to the particular Leading League, is 1 one of the most readers "soap opera", this kind of man is usually a box-office guarantee, you should not not think them, many of us love to hear the pup communicate, irrespective of whether many of us accept precisely what he / she claimed. Wherever he / she goes, can bring the particular dispute, he / she mentioned, is overbearing. Is often estimated, the particular Leading League subsequent time might be much more desired. Ferguson seems almost certainly going to pursue to tone United's squad, Stansted right after past summer's oversight, definitely while in the move current market over a huge, I assume the revolutionary assistance best they should warning three to four, your worried induce yet again. Of course , if Arsenal also can get 1, it will are already greater, also the particular Spurs also can use a point out while in the 7steps contest, once they can easily hold Baer, plus two or three best signings. The particular leading is very needed, is yet again the particular heavyweight shining, plus Mourinho's return, you can easliy at least see a few teams needed.

Probably the most significant

Probably the most significant moment with come across "the echelon spree" Wigan Fitness within the year, for virtually any Premiership competitors isn't really quick. This win of the stability within the subsequent 50 percent seems for you to opt for browsing team, regardless of whether Sze J Ni's attack rescue, or Wigan counterattack offside split, to ensure that A new Senna admirers stench an undesirable stench. You realize, in combination with 3 or more items, is currently rated 6th within the Little league of the Gunners can not take almost every other outcomes. Cazorla was by walking, Boer pedicle header gentle, Ramsey antiaircraft firearm take a position -- stress and anxiety within the team pass on......

The main element associated

The main element associated with challenge has over some and prevent relegation, both a can not find the money for to lose your challenge. Sometimes an excessive amount similar to get to an ambition, will frequently function table in order to a person's wish. "Evaluation to get some predicament, Wenger mentioned your group cannot disillusioned, for the reason that anything isn't about: "nothing may be determined but, it depends upon our own final circle and Newcastle competitors effects.
